The Hobbit
J.R.R Tolkien
New York: Houghton Mifflin Company,
1973. Print.
Set in the middle ages, this
adventurous tale is about a hobbit, Bilbo Baggins of the Shire. At the turn of
the first page, this book takes you back to a time where mountains were full of
danger - a place where trolls, goblins, elves and dwarves alike still roamed
the earth. Bilbo, never known to do anything out of the ordinary, is ushered
into an adventure he could never dream of. Bilbo and friends venture across
distant lands in spite of reclaiming what was taken from the dwarves years ago
by a dragon named Smaug. This heart felt story gives you a glimpse into the
history and politics of a neglected, but important period. This book is
appropriate for those who's hearts enjoy happy company and simple times - to
be swept out of their shoes by sticky situations under brutal circumstances - for those select few who find miracles and catastrophes to be a thing of beauty all at once - and of course exciting
endings. The hobbit leaves you wanting more.

I might have to re-read The Hobbit. I'm wondering if you had to rate it 1-10 what would you give it, compared say to Lord of the Rings? Did you feel like The Hobbit was more of a children's book (a criticism I sometimes hear) or was it as rich as the other works? Curious about your impressions. Loved your movie posts btw and hope to show them in class this week!
ReplyDeleteYour blog is really engaging. :)
Really nice preview, it really was more like a trailer of the book which is just what she wanted. The book seems interesting, I remember I started it when I was in 3rd or 4th grade but I stopped after 20 pages or so. I might need to pick it up again, but great job! Your post flows almost poetically, you gave me some great ideas and I'm going to update mine sometime soon.
ReplyDeleteThe Hobbit is definitely a great book, it's been awhile since I've read it. After reading your post, it makes me want to re read and be up to date again. Hopefully before the movie comes out!
ReplyDeleteYou should! The movie is going to be nuts. Cannot wait.
