Going Green

Over the past 10 years, prices at the pump have seen record-breaking numbers. As the demand for more efficient means of transportation continues to grow, car companies begin to manufacture cars that are cost-effective both financially and economically. The hybrid has been the biggest step forward in the automotive world since the diesel was introduced to the masses. The Hybrid is great because it has an internal generator that collects energy as the wheels rotate, storing it in its electric engine. This allows for a smaller internal combustion motor, which ultimately makes for a more efficient car. I think car manufacturers should begin lowering the costs of hybrid cars, because it allows people to save money on both gas, as well as preserve our waning resources.

Happiness, Happiness! Wherefore Art Thou Happiness?

In the article, “What is Success? Here’s a Better Definition,” Geoffrey James explains that success can be best defined by the amount of happiness in your life, rather than the amount of money. Most people tend to fall mercy to the misconception that happiness can be best gauged by how successful you have been financially in the past month, year, or lifetime for that matter. Contrary to these perceptions, when you take away all of the physical aspects of life – the cars, the house, the showcase wife, the perks – the only thing left is your Zen. How happy are you really when you cut out all of the extras? While I do believe it’s possible to be both rich and happy, there will come a time when the cars get garaged, the wife goes to bed, the perks run out, and the fame falls off . Only then will you begin to realize how much of a success your life has been, or if your material needs have been stealing the show. I define success as the amount of forward steps taken from square one vs the level of happiness at the present point – poor or rich, big or small – in the end your Zen will define you.

Through the sand we carve, searching for happiness - for success.

Book Review

The Hobbit
J.R.R Tolkien
New York: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1973. Print.

Set in the middle ages, this adventurous tale is about a hobbit, Bilbo Baggins of the Shire. At the turn of the first page, this book takes you back to a time where mountains were full of danger - a place where trolls, goblins, elves and dwarves alike still roamed the earth. Bilbo, never known to do anything out of the ordinary, is ushered into an adventure he could never dream of. Bilbo and friends venture across distant lands in spite of reclaiming what was taken from the dwarves years ago by a dragon named Smaug. This heart felt story gives you a glimpse into the history and politics of a neglected, but important period. This book is appropriate for those who's hearts enjoy happy company and simple times - to be swept out of their shoes by sticky situations under brutal circumstances - for those select few who find miracles and catastrophes to be a thing of beauty all at once - and of course exciting endings. The hobbit leaves you wanting more.
